Create Your Crowd is an exercise project developed in 2019 as an exam for one of my university courses. The task required a group of students to develop from the ground up a blog about a custom topic: my group’s chosen topic was crowdfunding.
My Contributions
My role was to design and develop a full responsive website using WordPress, while also publishing a few articles.
The project had been a small success, getting the attention of important players in the italian crowdfunding market, such as Starteed and Produzioni dal Basso.
Website Design
Create Your Crowd
Nov 2019 – Gen 2020
The goal of this project was to train our HTML and CSS knowledge in order to customize a default WordPress theme, while also get some familiarity with the CMS world.
We were briefed to divide the website into four section:
Blog
In-depth articles
About
Contacts
Our homepage worked as a shortcut page, linking to all the others sections of the website.
Once the website was over, I went along with designing a logo that could accompany the project.
While sketching, I saw an interesting opportunity offered by the name of the project itself: the concept of creating something with your own hands (this is what crowdfunding’s about) and that this something could attract a crowd of people interested in funding your idea.
The logo uses the figure-ground Gestalt organization in order to make the viewer perceive two different shapes at once.
Negative space effects such as this offer the opportunity to fill the entire space available without actually creating shapes, ensuring visual breath and simplicity.
Things I learned
Create Your Crowd
Nov 2019 – Gen 2020
In this project me and WordPress became friends. I learned how to manage a CMS, creating and updating new content on it, but also how to launch a simple WordPress website (such as my own portfolio) from start to finish.
In this project I also learned to use traffic analytics tools: we implemented Google Analytics on Create Your Crowd in order to monitor traffic and optimize a few aspects of our website based on the data we gathered.
